Nano Banana 2 Face Swap: Why v1 Never Worked

Nano Banana 2 face swap works because v2 added image-to-image; v1 is text-only and cannot swap at all. Version comparison, settings, costs and when to switch.

Nano Banana 2 Face Swap: The Version Matters

If you have tried a face swap on Nano Banana and got back a picture of a stranger instead of your own face in your own photo, the problem is almost certainly the version. Nano Banana 2 face swap works. Nano Banana v1 cannot do it at all — not with a better prompt, not with different settings.

They are two separate models with similar names. The original is text-to-image only: you give it words and it draws something. A face swap needs two images — the photo you are editing and the face you are borrowing — and v1 has nowhere to put the second one. So it does the only thing it can, and invents a face from your description.

This guide covers what changed in v2, how it compares to GPT Image 2 for swapping, which situations each one wins, and the exact settings to use. Everything runs on Bananaify's face swap tool.

V1 VS V2

What Changed Between v1 and v2

The addition that matters is image-to-image mode. Nano Banana 2 accepts an input image alongside the prompt, which is the entire technical prerequisite for swapping a face. Everything else — better prompt adherence, stronger photorealism — is welcome but secondary.

The practical consequence on Bananaify is that only models with image-to-image support appear in the Face Swap tab at all. That is Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5.0 Lite, Flux 2 Pro and GPT Image 2 for stills, plus Seedance 2 and Seedance 2 Mini for video. Nano Banana v1, Grok Imagine and Z-Image are all text-to-image, so they are simply not offered there — which saves you from discovering the limitation by spending credits on it.

Why the naming trips people up

“Nano Banana 2” reads like a minor revision, the way software point releases usually are. It is not. For this particular job the difference is binary: one model can do it and the other cannot. Most tutorials written before v2 shipped are still circulating, and their prompts genuinely did not work — which is why the fix so often gets misdiagnosed as a prompting problem.

RANKING

Which Model to Reach For

1st

Seedream 5.0 Lite

Sharpest identity transfer across the widest range of photos

Default choice

2nd

Flux 2 Pro

Close behind, and holds the original framing well

Strong second opinion

3rd

GPT Image 2

Best at targeting one person in a group photo

Reach for on group shots

4th

Nano Banana 2

Often better at matching awkward or mismatched lighting

Nano Banana v1

Text-to-image only — generates a new person instead

Not usable for swaps

All four working models sit in the same Face Swap tab — switching is one dropdown, so compare on your own photo

Nano Banana 2 vs GPT Image 2 for Face Swap

Both work. On balance GPT Image 2 is the stronger swapper of the two — it transfers identity more sharply and is more reliable when you ask it to change only one person in a group. Neither is the tab default any more, though: Seedream 5.0 Lite was added later and now ranks above both.

But Nano Banana 2 face swap results are close enough that the ranking flips on certain photos, particularly when the two source images were lit very differently. Nano Banana 2 tends to be better at reconciling colour temperature between a warm indoor portrait and a cool outdoor one.

Since both sit in the same tab behind one dropdown, and a photo swap costs 4 credits at standard resolution, running the same job through both costs 8 credits total. On a photo that matters, that is the cheapest quality decision available — far cheaper than iterating prompts on the wrong model.

PICKING BETWEEN THEM

When Nano Banana 2 Beats GPT Image 2

SituationReach forWhy
Mixed or coloured lightingNano Banana 2Stronger at reconciling colour temperature between two photos
Group photo, one personGPT Image 2More reliable at honouring 'change only this person'
Source photo is low qualityNano Banana 2Degrades more gracefully from a soft source face
Tight crop on the faceGPT Image 2Holds fine detail at large display sizes
Painting or stylised artEither — test bothStyle transfer quality varies by artwork
Profile or three-quarter angleGPT Image 2Better at inventing the unseen side of a face

A swap costs 4 credits, so running both and picking the better one costs 8 — usually worth it on a photo that matters

How to Run a Nano Banana 2 Face Swap

Open the face swap tool and stay on the Face Swap tab, then select Nano Banana 2 from the model dropdown.

  • 1. Upload the target photo — the image you want to edit, whose pose, background and clothing should survive.
  • 2. Upload the source face — front-facing and evenly lit works best. iPhone HEIC files convert automatically.
  • 3. Pick the swap mode — Single Face for a solo portrait, Multiple Faces to name one person in a group.
  • 4. Set the toggles — keep original hairstyle, match skin tone and lighting, enhance face detail.
  • 5. Generate. 4 credits at standard resolution, 8 at 4K, and the result comes back in about ten seconds.

You never write the prompt — the toggles compose it. The instruction sent for a default Nano Banana 2 face swap looks like this, and you can expand a preview in the panel to check it before spending anything:

Transfer only the facial identity from the second image onto the person in the first image. Copy from the second image just the identity-defining features: eye shape and colour, eyebrows, nose, lips, and the underlying bone structure of the face. Take everything else from the first image and leave it untouched: head angle, gaze direction, facial expression, mouth position, body pose, framing, background, clothing and lighting. The second image is a reference for identity only — ignore its expression, head tilt, gaze, hairstyle, lighting, background and crop. Do not crop, zoom or rescale: the subject must occupy exactly the same size and position in the frame as in the first image. Keep the hairstyle, hairline, facial hair and ears exactly as they are in the first image; do not carry any hair over from the second image. Match the skin tone, lighting direction and colour temperature of the first image. Blend the edges seamlessly so the result looks like an unedited photograph.

If you would rather write your own — for a painting, a specific medium, or stacked edits — the structure is broken down in our face swap prompt guide.

Settings That Change the Result Most

Match skin tone and lighting

Leave this on unless both photos were shot under identical light. It is the single setting that separates a believable edit from a cutout taped onto the picture, and it costs nothing extra.

Keep original hairstyle

On by default, and usually correct. Hair belongs to the head shape it grew on, so carrying the source hairstyle across is what makes a swap read as wrong even when the face itself is good. Turn it off deliberately, when you actually want the source person's hair.

Enhance face detail

Worth turning on for headshots and anything viewed large. For casual social posts it can push skin texture further than you want, so compare both.

Resolution

Standard is fine for screens. Step up to 4K when the image is going to print or will be cropped in hard — a Nano Banana 2 face swap costs 8 credits at that tier instead of 4.

What It Costs

4 credits per swap at standard resolution and 8 at 4K on Nano Banana 2. GPT Image 2 runs 4, 6 and 8 for standard, 2K and 4K respectively. Seedream 5.0 Lite is the cheapest at the top end — 4 credits at both 2K and 3K, 5 at 4K — and Flux 2 Pro runs 4 at 1K and 5 at 2K. Credit packs start at $19 for 100 credits, so a standard swap is roughly 75 cents and testing the same photo on two models is about a dollar and a half.

Credits never expire and are refundable for 7 days — a full refund if you have used 5% or less, pro-rated beyond that. The exact cost shows on the generate button before each run, so switching models or resolutions never produces a surprise.

Does Nano Banana 2 Do Video Face Swap?

No. Nano Banana 2 is an image model, so it handles stills only. Video face swapping needs a model that accepts a reference clip, which on Bananaify means Seedance 2.0 or Seedance 2.0 Mini — they read your whole clip as a reference and solve it in one job rather than frame by frame.

The AI face swap video guide covers the per-second rates and the 15-second clip limit, and the online walkthrough goes through the workflow step by step.

Troubleshooting

It generated a stranger instead of swapping

You are on Nano Banana v1, not v2. Check the model dropdown. This accounts for most reports of face swap not working on Nano Banana.

The background changed too

Unlikely through the Face Swap tab, since the composed prompt locks the background explicitly. If you are hand-writing a prompt in another mode, add “keep the original pose, framing, background and clothing unchanged.”

The wrong person changed in a group shot

Switch to Multiple Faces mode and describe the person by position plus one visible detail — “the man on the right in the grey jacket.” Roles, names and counting do not work. See the multiple face swap guide.

Skin tone looks off

Confirm match skin tone and lighting is on, then try the same job on GPT Image 2 — or the reverse, since which model handles a given lighting mismatch better is genuinely photo-dependent.

Whose Face You Can Use

Your own face, someone who agreed, or a public-domain artwork is fine. Using any face swap tool to impersonate a real person, fabricate something that looks like evidence, or produce sexual imagery of someone violates Bananaify's terms and, in a growing number of jurisdictions, the law. Explicit and non-consensual requests are blocked.

Uploads are used only to produce your result — not sold, not used to train models, not published anywhere — and generated files can be deleted from the dashboard at any time.

Nano Banana 2 Face Swap FAQ

Can Nano Banana do a face swap?

Nano Banana 2 can. The original Nano Banana cannot — it is text-to-image only and has no way to accept your source face, so it generates a new person instead.

Is Nano Banana 2 or GPT Image 2 better for swapping?

GPT Image 2 by a small margin, especially for targeting one person in a group. Nano Banana 2 often wins when the two photos have very different lighting. Both cost 4 credits at standard resolution, so testing both is cheap. Worth knowing that Seedream 5.0 Lite now outranks both and is the tab default.

Why did my face swap produce a random person?

The model was text-to-image. Switch to Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5.0 Lite, Flux 2 Pro or GPT Image 2 in the Face Swap tab.

Does it work on group photos?

Yes. Use Multiple Faces mode and name the person by position and clothing; everyone else stays exactly as photographed.

What resolution can I get?

Up to 4K on Nano Banana 2, at 8 credits instead of 4. No watermark at any tier.

Can it swap faces in video?

Not Nano Banana 2 — it is an image model. Video swaps run on Seedance 2.0 or Seedance 2.0 Mini in the Video Face Swap tab.

Getting Started

Select Nano Banana 2 — or any of Seedream 5.0 Lite, Flux 2 Pro and GPT Image 2 in the same dropdown — upload two photos, leave match skin tone on, and generate. If a swap has been failing for you, the model dropdown is the first place to look — not the prompt.

Open the face swap tool, or read the prompt guide if you want to write your own instructions. For a broader model comparison, see Nano Banana 2 vs Pro and what Nano Banana is.
