How to Make a Face Swap GIF
A face swap GIF is a short looping clip with your face — or a friend's — swapped onto someone else. It auto-plays and auto-loops on iMessage, Slack, Discord and Reddit, which is why it gets more engagement than a still swap or a video file that needs a play button.
The process is two steps, not one. First you swap the face in a video clip, then you convert the result to GIF. Most tools that advertise a one-step face swap GIF maker are really doing both under the hood — and doing the swap part with a per-frame filter that flickers. Separating the two lets you use a proper reference-video model for the swap and a free converter for the format.
THE WORKFLOW
Face Swap GIF in Four Steps
Upload clip + face photo → Video Face Swap tab → generate
Result comes back as an MP4 with no watermark
Use ezgif.com, CloudConvert, or ffmpeg — free, instant
GIF loops natively on iMessage, Slack, Discord, Reddit
Step 3 takes about 10 seconds on any free converter — the face swap is the hard part, not the format
Step 1: Swap the Face in the Clip
Open the face swap tool and switch to the Video Face Swap tab.
- Upload the clip. Pick a short, loopable clip — 3 to 5 seconds is ideal for a face swap GIF. The tool accepts clips up to 15 seconds; output durations of 4 and 5 seconds are the most common for GIF use.
- Upload the face photo. Front-facing and well lit. Matching the head angle in the clip produces a noticeably cleaner result.
- Pick the model. Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p is the sweet spot for a face swap GIF — the resolution is higher than GIF can reproduce anyway (256 colours), so there is no point paying for 720p or 1080p. A 5-second clip at Mini 480p costs about 5 credits.
- Set toggles. Keep original hairstyle and match skin tone — both on. If the clip has several people, use Multiple Faces mode and name the one you mean.
- Generate. Check the credit cost on the button. The render takes a few minutes. Download the MP4 when it finishes — no watermark.
The result is an MP4 with the face swapped and the identity locked across every frame. It looks right at full speed because the model solved the entire clip as one job rather than processing each frame separately.
Step 2: Convert to GIF
The face swap produces an MP4. GIF is a different container with different trade-offs — most importantly it loops natively, which is the whole reason you want a face swap GIF rather than a video. Converting takes about 10 seconds in any free tool.
Using ezgif.com (recommended)
- Go to ezgif.com > Video to GIF.
- Upload the MP4 from step 1.
- Set the frame rate to 12 fps — smooth enough for a reaction loop, small enough to share.
- Set the width to 480px — any wider and the file size balloons past what most platforms accept inline.
- Click Convert. Download the GIF.
Using ffmpeg (one command)
If you have ffmpeg installed, this one line does the whole conversion:
ffmpeg -i swapped.mp4 -vf "fps=12,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos,split[s0][s1];[s0]palettegen[p];[s1][p]paletteuse" output.gifThe palette generation step is what keeps the colours looking decent despite GIF's 256-colour limit. Without it the result is visibly banded.
CONVERSION TOOLS
MP4 to GIF — Four Ways
| Tool | Type | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ezgif.com | Browser | Free | Upload MP4, set crop/fps/size, download GIF. The default for most people. |
| CloudConvert | Browser | Free (25/day) | Drag-and-drop, more format options, API available. |
| ffmpeg (CLI) | Local | Free | ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=12,scale=480:-1" output.gif — total control. |
| Giphy Create | Browser | Free | Upload, trim, add text/stickers, publish directly to Giphy. |
12 fps and 480px wide is the sweet spot — small file, smooth enough for a reaction loop
Why Separate the Swap from the GIF
Tools that promise a one-step face swap GIF are doing both the swap and the conversion in one pipeline. The swap part is almost always a per-frame filter — quick, but every frame re-decides what the face looks like, which produces the flicker you see in most face swap GIFs online.
Separating the steps lets you use a reference-video model (Seedance 2 on Bananaify) for the swap, which holds identity across every frame, and a free converter for the format change. The GIF conversion is trivial — the face swap is the expensive step, and it is worth doing properly.
The technical difference between frame-by-frame and reference-video is covered in depth in the AI face swap video guide.
FORMAT CHOICE
GIF vs Video — When to Use Which
| GIF | MP4 / Video | |
|---|---|---|
| Loops automatically | ✅ Native | ❌ Needs player controls |
| File size | Large (5–15 MB for 5s) | Small (0.5–2 MB) |
| Quality | 256 colours max, dithered | Full colour, sharp |
| Sound | ❌ None | ✅ Audio track |
| Works on iMessage/Slack | ✅ Inline preview | ⚠️ Sometimes, depends on platform |
| Works on Reddit/Discord | ✅ Inline | ✅ Inline |
| Best for | Reactions, memes, short loops | Anything longer or with audio |
GIF wins on auto-loop and chat compatibility. Video wins on quality and file size. Pick by where you are posting.
When to Use a GIF vs a Video
A face swap GIF wins on two properties: it auto-loops and it auto-plays inline. That makes it the right format for reaction clips, memes, Slack emotes and anything you send in a chat. The trade-off is quality — GIF is limited to 256 colours and produces larger files than MP4 for the same content.
If the clip has audio, keep it as an MP4. If the destination is YouTube, TikTok or Instagram, use the video file. If it is going to iMessage, Discord, Slack or Reddit as an inline reaction — GIF.
File size tips
- Shorter is smaller. A 3-second GIF is half the size of a 5-second one. Cut to the loop point.
- 480px wide is the ceiling. Wider GIFs balloon past 10 MB, which some platforms reject or compress into mush.
- 12 fps, not 24. Half the frames, half the size, and smooth enough for a looping face swap.
- Fewer colours is fine. Most converters let you set 128 instead of 256 — visually similar, noticeably smaller.

What It Costs
The face swap is the paid step. A 5-second clip on Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p costs about 5 credits — the cheapest video swap tier, and more than enough for a face swap GIF that will be viewed at 480px wide on a phone screen.
The GIF conversion is free — ezgif.com, CloudConvert and ffmpeg are all free tools. Credit packs start at $19 for 100 credits, so one pack gets you roughly 20 face swap GIFs. Credits never expire and are refundable for 7 days.

Open the Face Swap ToolWhose Face You Can Use
Your own face, someone who agreed, or public-domain footage. GIFs spread fast and are hard to take back — which makes the consent question more important, not less. Using any face swap tool to impersonate a real person or produce sexual imagery of someone violates Bananaify's terms and, increasingly, the law. Explicit and non-consensual requests are blocked.
Face Swap GIF FAQ
Can I make a face swap GIF directly?
Not in one step on Bananaify — the tool outputs MP4. Convert with ezgif.com (free, 10 seconds). One-step GIF makers exist but use per-frame filters that flicker.
What resolution should I use?
480p for the swap, 480px wide for the GIF. GIF only supports 256 colours, so paying for 720p or 1080p buys resolution the format cannot display.
How long should the clip be?
3 to 5 seconds. Shorter loops are smoother, smaller, and funnier. The tool supports up to 15 seconds but a 15-second GIF is a large file.
Why does my face swap GIF flicker?
The swap was done frame by frame. Use a reference-video model — it solves the whole clip as one job, so the identity does not re-roll between frames. See the video swap walkthrough.
Can I upload a GIF to swap?
The tool accepts MP4 clips, not GIF inputs. Convert your GIF to MP4 first (ezgif.com does this too), swap the face, then convert back.
What does it cost?
About 5 credits for a 5-second clip at Mini 480p, plus free GIF conversion. Credit packs from $19, refundable 7 days.
